How Has Feminine Care Evolved Throughout History?
The Struggles Women Faced in the Past
Women in ancient times lived in an era that offered little to no access to basic healthcare, hygiene, or innovations designed to support their well-being. During menstruation, women often endured a difficult and silent journey due to a lack of medical awareness, limited hygiene options, and restrictive social traditions.
In the past, women used pieces of fabric, animal skins, and makeshift pads made from moss and plant fibers. These methods could create an environment for irritation, infections, and bacterial growth.
But the struggles did not end there. In some communities, women also faced social isolation and forced traditions. During menstruation, women were sometimes sent away from their homes to designated menstrual huts, based on the belief that they were impure and should not interact with others as usual. They could be prohibited from cooking, touching household belongings, accessing wells, or handling food, out of fear that they would contaminate water sources or crops.
Society also taught women to feel shame about a natural function of their bodies. They were often discouraged from expressing or even discussing the pain and physical exhaustion they experienced during their periods. Menstruation became one of the greatest taboos, leaving generations of women carrying feelings of shame and stigma surrounding their periods and their bodies. As a result, women began using euphemisms and alternative names when referring to menstruation.
Women in the past also experienced severe menstrual pain and cramping, while access to pain relief and medical treatment was often limited. Menstruation was frequently viewed as something that did not require medical attention and simply had to be endured in silence.
As time passed, fabric became one of the most common menstrual care options because it was accessible, affordable, and reusable. Women could wash and reuse it multiple times. However, many were forced to wash stained fabrics secretly in rivers or at night, away from others, and dry them in dark or damp places—conditions that could contribute to bacterial growth.
All of these factors contributed to an unhealthy physical and emotional environment for women. Poor hygiene, untreated pain, and limited healthcare could have serious consequences for their overall well-being and reproductive health.
With the passage of time and advances in healthcare and technology, women gained greater access to essential care, and commercial menstrual products began appearing in the market as modern solutions designed to ease many of the challenges women had faced in the past.
However, unfortunately, these developments have not been without their own concerns. Many widely available products still rely on synthetic and plastic-based materials, along with added fragrances and bleaching agents, which may contribute to skin irritation and sensitivity for some women. Others may experience discomfort, a feeling of dampness, or irritation throughout the day.
For many women, the “modern solution” became a new kind of silent struggle—where comfort could come at the expense of feeling comfortable in their own skin. The struggle had not necessarily disappeared; it had simply changed form.
This historical journey—from isolation and hardship to modern consumer products—has shown us that women need more than just a “sanitary pad.” They deserve thoughtful care, genuine comfort, and products designed with the sensitivity and physiology of their bodies in mind.
